Revisiting Howards End: Notes Towards an Analysis of Forster’s Novel

In this week’s Dispatches from The Secret Library, Dr Oliver Tearle analyses the importance of dwelling and houses in Forster’s classic novel

E. M. Forster’s novel Howards End was published in 1910 and written in 1908-10. This can be seen as significant for several reasons. It places the novel in the Edwardian period, a time when, in the wake of the nineteenth century and the long Victorian era, houses were being torn down and rebuilt, or replaced with apartment blocks which were more financially remunerative.
