What a purrfect way to pass a few minutes – sitting back and enjoying our ten favourite quotes about our feline friends. These quotes are about cats, but are anything but catty: many of the writers featured below are fully paid-up ailurophiles, or cat-lovers.
‘Authors like cats because they are such quiet, lovable, wise creatures, and cats like authors for the same reasons.’ – Robertson Davies
‘When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction.’ – Mark Twain
‘I am glad you have a Cat, but I do not believe it is so remarkable a cat as My Cat.’ – T. S. Eliot (letter to his godson, 1931)
‘Little one, I would like to see anyone — prophet, king or God — persuade a thousand cats to do anything at the same time.’ – Neil Gaiman
‘When I play with my cat, who knows if I am not more of a pastime to her than she is to me?’ – Montaigne
‘If a fish is the movement of water embodied, given shape, then cat is a diagram and pattern of subtle air.’ – Doris Lessing
‘Cats will amusingly tolerate humans only until someone comes up with a tin opener that can be operated with a paw.’ – Terry Pratchett
‘I think all cats are wild. They only act tame if there’s a saucer of milk in it for them.’ – Douglas Adams
‘How we behave toward cats here below determines our place in heaven.’ – Robert Heinlein
‘A cat has absolute emotional honesty: human beings, for one reason or another, may hide their feelings, but a cat does not.’ – Ernest Hemingway

Reblogged from Interesting Literature. As an aside, I have a refrigerator magnet that says, “Cats are like potato chips. You can’t have just one.”
Another great Terry Pratchett quote about cats.
Thanks for this collection! Hard to say which one I like the best. Can’t pick just one.
I have to admit I am not a cat person . . . But I loved your cat quotes! Just what I needed on a gloomy, rainy Friday. Thx
SHOCK! Is this the end of a beautiful friendship Erich? And surely, you aren’t suggesting that the pictures weren’t as lovable as the quotes?
Hate to admit this, but I’ll take a pithy cat quote over a cute cat picture any day of the week.
Wonderful quotes. I read them to my cat, and he agrees with all of them.

It’s just a cat kind of week, isn’t it? Buzzfeed has up “The 100 most important Cat pictures of all time” as well. http://www.buzzfeed.com/expresident/best-cat-pictures
And though I’m not a cat-picture lover, both your quotes here and the hilarious and highly educated commentary there got me smiling! Thanks!
Brilliant. Had to reblog this.

Loved this, especially the first one. Thanks Interesting Literature for the original.
Beautiful quotes!
Just to expand your collection:
Come my beautiful cat, rest on my amorous heart.
Restrain the sharp claws of your passage;
I will plunge into the hearth
Where your agate eyes burn with savage
Metal… (Charles Baudelaire)
Loved it ! Everyone one of them is so TRUE !!!
Marvellous. I loved Lessing’s ‘ diagram and pattern of subtle air’, though the patterns and diagrams of subtle air I share my space with, having been fed, are strangely becalmed at the moment!

Great! Poebus would have something to say about all of these! ;-)
Cats don’t have owners. They have staff.
I love this is very much! :)

Great cat quotes from great writers—oh yeah.
I was going to pick out a favorite to name, but really, I can’t!
And yet do we ever hear praise for the pet rabbit? Or is it just stuff about their chewing the buttons off the remote?

All true
Indeed–Mr Twain certainly loved cats, especially kittens. Who would have thought the king of quip could be so bemused by wit of cat.
I was about to say that I agree with Mark Twain’s quote, until I realize that I must now acknowledge Ernest Hemingway as a comrade and friend. That is a step beyond.
I also love T.S. Eliot’s quote, because everyone’s cat is remarkable. :)

I just found this from interestingliterature.com and being a writer and having a cat I just had to reblog this one, enjoy.

the book shelf. Thanks for this.
These are great! There’s plenty about dogs too. Writers seem to have an interesting affinity with animals…
Being an ailurophile, I absolutely adored this post!

I don’t think it is a coincidence that witches had a cat as their muse and sidekick. They cast their spells and so do writers. Interesting literature is indeed interesting.

TS Eliot, my cat is better than your cat. Read all about it http://decodomino.wordpress.com/2013/12/23/moomins-arent-just-for-christmas/

This one was a unique funny post, like all of them don´t get me wrong all the posts are interesting and informative but cats and authors? That was a unique mix. No wonder I don´t get published if I have to monster dogs. Getting rid of them now and buying a cat, maybe luck will change.
Wonderful list of quotes. I am definitely a cat person. There is not one in my life right now, for the first time in about 45 years. A piece of me seems to be missing somewhere.
I don’t currently have a cat, but that’s mainly because I do have a rabbit, and I fear the two may not mix well … at least not so far as the rabbit is concerned.

Thank you to everyone for the comments on this post, which was a great deal of fun to compile! Perhaps we should do a post on pictures of ‘Interesting Literature’s readers and their cats’ in the future? :)
